UN Forms Advisory Panel to Oversee Artificial Intelligence Governance

The United Nations has announced the creation of a new advisory panel focused on artificial intelligence, aiming to guide global efforts in ensuring the technology is developed and used responsibly. The move comes amid growing concerns about the risks of AI misuse, from disinformation and job displacement to ethical challenges around privacy and human rights.

The panel will bring together experts from governments, academia, industry, and civil society to recommend frameworks for safe and inclusive AI governance. Its mandate includes examining the impact of AI on development, security, and international cooperation, while also ensuring that emerging technologies benefit all nations, especially developing economies.

UN officials said the initiative underscores the urgency of establishing international standards as AI adoption accelerates across sectors. The panel’s findings are expected to shape future UN policies and could lay the groundwork for a global agreement on AI regulation.
