WhatsApp will stop using phone numbers and start using @username handles.

The most recent Android beta version showed this advancement. In order to provide equitable access to popular usernames, the beta build 2.25.28.12 serves as a prelude. According to people acquainted with the upgrade, users will be able to reserve their chosen handles in advance, avoiding a rush or unfair advantage for those in testing programs. Since revealing a phone number has been the only method to establish contact on WhatsApp, the drive toward usernames addresses long-standing privacy concerns. Industry watchers point out that this modification would put WhatsApp more in line with competitors like Signal and Telegram, which have long provided handle-based interactions without disclosing private contact information.

According to Sammy Fans, the function has a settings option for reserving usernames, enabling distinct identifiers for simpler messaging and discovery within the program. According to WABetaInfo, development has been underway for more than two years, with indications first showing up in WhatsApp beta versions in 2023. This phased rollout demonstrates Meta’s methodical approach to improving a platform with more than 3 billion users while striking a balance between innovation and dependability. In addition to improving privacy, the app’s introduction of handles makes it possible for more seamless connections, including cross-platform messaging or business tools.

Additionally, on sites like X (previously Twitter), where early adopters claim desirable handles, problems like account squatting may be lessened by the reservation mechanism. Data security and interoperability issues surface when WhatsApp transitions to a username system. Although Meta has not verified any integrations, laws such as the EU’s Digital Markets Act encourage open messaging systems, which may make it easier for users to interact across apps. This change shows that WhatsApp’s infrastructure has matured, emphasizing user control and privacy. Although a formal launch date has not yet been set, beta testing indicates that it will happen soon, putting WhatsApp in a position to revolutionize private communication.
