Lecornu is reappointed as PM by Emmanuel Macron.

In order to approve a 2026 budget, 47-year-old Macron will be hoping that loyalist Lecornu can garner enough support from a sharply split parliament. Many of Macron’s opponents have called for him to call new legislative elections or step down in the face of France’s biggest political crisis in decades. When Lecornu was appointed, the hard left and far right immediately reacted negatively, implying that his second term as prime minister would be no easier than his first, which ended on Monday when he resigned after just 27 days in office.

Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally party, wrote on X that the Lecornu II cabinet, which was put in place by Emmanuel Macron, who is more distant and out of touch than ever at the Elysee Palace, is a bad joke, a democratic embarrassment, and a humiliation for the French people. LECORNU’S TOP PRIORITY IS TO PASS THE 2026 BUDGET. The conservative Republicans and the Socialist leadership, who will be essential to Lecornu’s survival, did not respond right away. Delivering a budget to parliament by the end of Monday will be Lecornu’s top priority.

He posted on X, saying, “I accept – out of duty – the mission entrusted to me by the President of the Republic to do everything possible to provide France with a budget by the end of the year and to address the daily life issues of our fellow citizens.” “This political crisis that irritates the French people and this instability that is detrimental to France’s interests and image must end.” Lecornu went on to say that anyone joining his administration would have to give up their personal goals of taking over for Macron in 2027, a contest that has caused instability in France’s tense legislature and weak minority governments. He promised that his cabinet will “exemplify diversity and renewal.”

Lecornu had “carte blanche,” according to Macron’s team, indicating that the president was giving his prime minister a lot of leeway in negotiating a budget and cabinet.
