Since the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominated Sohail Afridi for the coveted position, four contenders are running for the position of chief minister. However, the Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) has nominated Molana Lutf Ur Rehman. Sardar Shahjahan Yousuf and Arbab Zarak Khan are the candidates put forward by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for the position of chief minister, respectively. There are 145 members of the KP legislature, 93 members of the ruling party, and 52 members of the opposition parties who will cast ballots for their candidates today. For the new CM to be elected, 73 votes are required. Consultations with the opposition parties are in progress to select a joint candidate for the role of chief minister.
Sohail Afridi, the candidate of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), earlier yesterday announced that he has filed his nomination papers for the position of chief minister. He will succeed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur, the chief minister, who resigned at the founder of the PTI’s request. After submitting his candidacy papers, he spoke to the media and stated that we must now proceed with the democratic process in accordance with the constitution. No one should meddle in the democratic process, he said. He added, “I will present my policy on the floor of the assembly.” Additionally, the chief minister’s office nomination paperwork for three opposition parties have been turned in. Sardar Jahan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Maulana Lutfur Rehman of the JUI, and Arbab Zarak of the People’s Party have all submitted their candidacy papers.
At 4:00 PM, the Speaker KP Assembly will oversee the examination of the nomination documents. On Monday, October 13, at 10:00 AM, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister will be chosen by a show of hands.
