India on Sunday successfully launched its heaviest communication satellite, marking a major achievement in the country’s growing space program.

The CMS-03 satellite lifted off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at 5:26 pm (1156 GMT).

“Our space sector continues to make us proud!” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has announced plans to send an Indian astronaut to the Moon by 2040.

Weighing approximately 4,410 kilograms (9,722 pounds), CMS-03 is the heaviest communication satellite ever launched by India, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

The Indian Navy stated that the satellite will enhance secure communication links between ships, aircraft, and submarines.

CMS-03 was launched aboard the 43.5-metre (143-foot) tall LVM3-M5 rocket, an upgraded version of the vehicle that carried India’s unmanned lunar craft in August 2023.

Only Russia, the United States, and China have previously achieved controlled landings on the Moon, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in space exploration.

Over the last decade, India’s space program has expanded significantly, showing strong momentum and international recognition.

Shubhanshu Shukla, an Indian Air Force test pilot, became the second Indian to travel to space this year and the first to reach the International Space Station, a key milestone toward India’s planned crewed mission in 2027.
