“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realise has been a long wait,” says Rockstar Games. San Francisco: The developers of the popular “Grand Theft Auto” video game franchise revealed on Wednesday that the latest entry has been postponed once more, this time until November 2026. “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realise has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” Rockstar Games stated in a post on X.
The game’s original release date of late 2025 had already been moved to early 2026. According to Rockstar, it will now be released on November 19 of the next year. Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, saw its shares fall more than 8% in after-hours trading. The multi-billion dollar studio was accused of “blatant union busting” by sacking 31 employees by dozens of protestors outside its Edinburgh, Scotland, offices on the same day that word of the delay spread. Rockstar has accused the staff of “distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies.” The company’s upcoming sixth installment of the cash cow series is one of the most anticipated releases of 2026.
However, the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), who organized the protest, denied that assertion, claiming that all of the fired employees belonged to a union-affiliated private discussion channel. An AFP query was not immediately answered by Rockstar. “GTA VI” is expected to rank among the largest entertainment product releases ever. Even though the genre is well-known for its violent and sexual themes, from its debut in 1997, players have been able to roleplay as criminals carrying out nefarious crimes around expansive cityscapes. A couple of outlaws?
Originally scheduled for release later this year, the newest game included a playable female protagonist for the first time and was set in Miami-like Vice City, according to a video. Set to the Tom Petty song “Love Is A Long Road,” it begins with Lucia, a female character, being freed from prison in what seems to be a fictionalized Florida. She informs her male accomplice near the end of the one-minute and thirty-second video, “The only way we are going to get through this is by sticking together, being a team.” With bandanas covering their lower faces and pistols drawn, the two then storm into a business.
The scene was interpreted by fans as proof that the rumors of a crime couple akin to “Bonnie and Clyde” were coming true. The GTA series has been criticized for its violent content despite its enormous success. Grand Theft Auto has long been accused by critics of glorifying violence and inciting players to commit crimes; Take-Two Interactive, based in New York, has denied these claims. Players of Grand Theft Auto engage in a variety of activities, including drug sales, fighting, robberies, and automobile rampages. Activists were incensed by gameplay options that included going to strip clubs and attacking sex workers.
