Following an outbreak of newborn botulism, baby formula was recalled

Breathing problems and paralysis of the muscles can result from infant botulism. After 13 babies were found to have botulism after ingesting the powdered formula, baby formula producer ByHeart Inc. decided to recall a portion of the product. Thirteen reported cases of newborn botulism and hospitalizations in ten states are being looked into by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Every baby impacted had eaten powdered newborn formula under the ByHeart brand. According to the CDC, infant botulism can cause respiratory problems, paralysis of the muscles, and weeks of hospitalization. The toxin has remedies, despite the fact that it can be lethal. This particular outbreak has not been linked to any deaths.

According to FDA and CDC officials, they are analyzing remaining formula to find out where the infection came from. ByHeart consented to recall two suspected tainted formula packages. “We are taking this proactive step to remove any potential risk from the market and ensure the highest level of safety for infants, even though no testing by ByHeart or regulatory agencies has confirmed the presence of Clostridium botulinum spores or toxin in any ByHeart product,” co-founder and president Mia Funt said in a statement. According to its website, the ByHeart formula is the “closest-to-breast-milk patented protein blend and made with organic, grass-fed whole milk.”
