The star of “Materialists” discusses what it’s like to be a producer in the film business. Dakota Johnson recently talked about her actual experience as a Hollywood producer. During a thorough discussion at the Red Sea Film Festival on December 5, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress discloses that she is “in an internal battle all the time” while working in the film industry.
“I was raised on this field. The actress says, “I always wanted to be a bigger part of the project because I grew up on set watching my parents work and seeing how they would interact with filmmakers, producers, and collaborators.” Since TeaTime Pictures was founded, Dakota has been juggling performing and producing. She says she has a “love-hate relationship with my job in all aspects.” Speaking out about her experience at the event on Friday, the Madame Web actress finds it “exhausting” at times. “Producing you see behind the curtain and it’s really ugly,” Dakota notes. It doesn’t appeal to me. The actress-turned-producer has also come to the realization that lenders “are really shady sometimes is heartbreaking.”
It’s devastating for me as a producer. It’s devastating for an actress. The 36-year-old adds, “But [my job] is also quite fulfilling, and I’m very grateful I get to do both.” The Splitsville actress says she’s “learning what is right” for herself when reflecting on her career. Dakota adds, “I’ve definitely been convinced to do things in the past that I realize in retrospect weren’t right for me.” “That’s also part of the experience, and I’m lucky I have a job,” the Materialists actress says. Producing is “more challenging,” according to Dakota, who produced seven films in seven years.
The American celebrity says, “There’s something about acting where I feel like I’m in a bubble, and producing, you see behind the curtain and it’s really ugly.”
