A man receives Dh170,000 from an Abu Dhabi court after a buddy defaults on a loan

The defendant did not show up or provide proof to refute the allegation, the court determined. Abu Dhabi: A man who sued his buddy for failing to return Dh150,000 entrusted to him won the case, and the court ordered the defendant to reimburse the money plus Dh20,000 for material and moral damages. Emarat Al Youm claims that the claimant filed a signed trust receipt demonstrating that the defendant had received the money with the understanding that it would be returned upon request, which led to the case being taken before the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court. The defendant refused to return the money despite numerous attempts to do so.

The defendant did not show up or provide any proof to refute the charge or demonstrate that he did not owe the sum, the court concluded. The court upheld the defendant’s continued legal obligation to return the money in its decision. When determining the compensation, the court pointed out that anyone who injures another person is accountable for the subsequent injury under civil law. It concluded that the claimant suffered both financial loss and psychological pain as a result of the defendant’s blatant breach of trust by failing to return the money. The defendant is required by the ruling to pay Dh150,000, Dh20,000 in damages, and court costs and legal fees. Every other claim was rejected.
