People who share illicit content on social media platforms have received a warning from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). A PTA spokeswoman issued a statement advising people to be wary of illegal content on the internet. According to the statement, it is completely unacceptable to promote or participate in illicit actions under the pretense of exercising the fundamental right to freedom of expression on digital platforms.

According to the PTA, the PECA Act of 2016 prohibits the dissemination of fake news on social media platforms, incitement against any person or organization, hateful and false propaganda directed at defense and other national institutions, obscene or immoral content, and the desecration of religions, prophets, or holy figures. Through the PTA CMS mobile application, the authorities have urged the public to report such information in the public interest and to contribute to the country’s peace and order. Telecom customers were previously reminded by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that every SIM card had to be registered in the user’s name.

The PTA warned that using SIMs registered in someone else’s name is against applicable legislation and asked customers to utilize their SIMs and telecoms services responsibly.
