A collision between two high-speed trains in Spain on Sunday claimed at least 40 passengers as a result, with hundreds more injured too, according to initial reports, which have made it one of the deadliest railway accidents in Europe in more than 80 years

Point of Location and Sequence of Actions

The crash took place at around 7:45pm local time (CET) by the town of Adamuz, in Córdoba province of the south of Spain, along the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line. One train operated by Iryo, traveling from Málaga to Madrid, had a rear-end derailment on it when going against the track used for the next trains

Shortly after that, a Renfe train from Madrid to Huelva collided with the derailed train and went also derailed. The crash happened on a straight track, not on curve. This stretch of railway had only recently seen a €700 million upgrade in May 2025 in an attempt to modernise Spain’s high-speed rail infrastructure.

Death Toll and Injuries

Recent figures from the official count are: At least 40 folks are confirmed dead, and the loss is expected to rise as search missions continue to locate passengers.

292 others were hurt and included:

  • Approximately 170 with minor injuries.
  • 122 in serious to critical condition.

For the time of the crash, about 527 passengers were on the two combined train.

To address the magnitude of the tragedy, authorities created a temporary field hospital at a sports centre in Adamuz. They suspended the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed rail route to allow for rescues.

Initial Investigation: Faulty Rail Joint Could Be The Cause

As detectives investigate what caused the crash, early signs show wear and tear in a rail joint, or a fishplate, that holds together parts of the rail. The damage could have created a growing gap between rail segments as the trains have traversed the area repeatedly (The Independent).

The experts briefing on the investigation; who, maintaining anonymity, could not respond to subsequent questions and could not speak out on such details

The damaged rail joint slowly widened the gap between the rails. The widening gap is thought to have been a critical factor that caused the first train to derail (The Independent).

The Iryo train reportedly travelled over the damaged section earlier without incident. However, later that same evening, the 6th, 7th, and 8th carriages at the rear of the train derailed, pulling the train onto the opposite track just as the Renfe train approached (The Independent).

Rescue efforts and obstacles

Access to the crash site was exceptionally difficult, rescue commanders said, due to several factors:

  • Mountainous terrain and surrounding olive groves
  • A single narrow access road leading to the site

These conditions significantly complicated both the evacuation of injured passengers and the transportation of heavy rescue equipment (The Independent).

Political and Public Response

  • Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of national mourning to honour the victims and express solidarity with their families (The Independent).
  • Juan Manuel Moreno, president of the Andalusia regional government, expressed deep concern and pledged full support to the victims and their families (The Independent).

Both national and regional authorities stated that government agencies and emergency services continue to work closely together to support those affected by the disaster.

Historic significance

The disaster is considered:

  • One of the deadliest railway accidents in Europe in more than 80 years
  • The most serious rail tragedy since the 2013 Santiago de Compostela derailment, which claimed 79 lives.

Investigation ongoing

Investigators are continuing to examine:

  • The structural condition of the rail infrastructure
  • Maintenance and inspection procedures
  • Safety standards governing high-speed rail operations

Authorities say that ongoing analysis will be used to determine the official cause of the incident and to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Key points

  • A high-speed train accident near Adamuz, Spain, killed at least 40 people and injured hundreds more.
  • The crash occurred after one train derailed and entered an oncoming track, colliding with another train.
  • Investigators are focusing on a worn rail joint as a key contributing factor.
