Donald Trump threatens to impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it completes a trade agreement with China

As tensions with Ottawa increase, the US president issues a dire warning.

Washington: On Saturday, US President Donald Trump threatened to levy a 100% tariff on any goods entering Canada if it reached a trade agreement with China. Since Trump took office almost a year ago, relations between the US and its northern neighbor have been tense. Trade disputes have arisen, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a “rupture” in the US-led international system.

Carney celebrated a “new strategic partnership” with China during a visit to Beijing last week, which led to a “preliminary but landmark trade agreement” to lower tariffs. However, Trump threatened dire repercussions should the agreement come to pass. Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that Carney “is sorely mistaken if he thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States.””Canada will be completely consumed by China, including its businesses, social structure, and overall way of life,” he declared. “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA.”

Beginning with Carney’s address on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he received a standing ovation for his candid assessment of a “rupture” in the US-led global system, the two leaders have been honing their rhetorical skills in recent days. Although the US president was not specifically mentioned, his remark was widely interpreted as a reference to Trump’s disruptive effect on global events. A day later, Trump retaliated against Carney in his own address and then revoked an invitation for the prime minister of Canada to become a member of his “Board of Peace”—his self-described organization for settling international disputes.

The body was first created to monitor the situation in postwar Gaza, but it now seems to have a far broader purview, raising concerns that Trump wants to establish a rival to the UN.The United States is not the reason Canada exists. In a national speech on Thursday, Carney acknowledged the “remarkable partnership between the two nations” and stated, “Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

Trade disputes

Over 75% of Canada’s exports go to the United States, making commerce with that country extremely important.

Trump’s global sectoral tariffs have severely impacted important Canadian industries including steel, aluminum, and automobiles, but the president’s widespread adherence to an existing North American free trade agreement has lessened the effects of the levies. Trump has consistently maintained that the United States does not require access to any Canadian goods, which would have far-reaching implications for its northern neighbor. Negotiations to amend that agreement are scheduled to begin this year. Additionally, Trump has made repeated threats to annex Canada. This week, he shared a picture of a map on social media showing Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela all covered by the American flag.

Later this year, the two countries will host the World Cup alongside Mexico.
