According to Indian media, Zubeen Garg, 52, the highest-paid singer and multi-instrumentalist in Assam, died in a scuba diving accident at Lazarus Island on September 19 before his planned opening act at the festival. Siddhartha Sharma, his manager, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival’s chief organizer, have been arrested in connection with his death. Notably, Interpol had already issued a watch notice for Sharma and Mahanta, instructing them to appear before the CID by October 6.
After receiving the notification, Sharma was arrested from an apartment in Gurugram, Mahanta was arrested from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport when he arrived from Singapore, and both were then sent to Guwahati for interrogation. They are being held by the police on remand for 14 days. It is important to note that in order to look into the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death, the Assam government assembled a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was headed by Special DGP M P Gupta. In addition to Sharma and Mahanta, the SIT had sent out notifications asking festival goers and Singapore Assam Association members to make testimonies.
