Lionel Messi has rejoined the Argentina national football team after missing the recent match against Venezuela due to his Major League Soccer (MLS) commitments with Inter Miami.
The 38-year-old star was initially called up by Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni for the friendlies against Venezuela and Puerto Rico. However, Messi did not feature in the squad for Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Venezuela on October 10 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Instead, the Inter Miami captain played for his club against Atlanta United on October 11. Inter Miami requested his presence for their crucial penultimate MLS regular-season match as the team continues to push for a higher position in the Eastern Conference standings. Argentina’s management approved the request, allowing Messi to fulfill his club duties before returning to national service.
Miami coach Javier Mascherano earlier noted the team’s need for Messi’s leadership and skill, saying he would welcome the Argentine legend’s presence if permitted to play between the two international fixtures.
Messi shined in Miami’s 4-0 victory, scoring the opening goal in what was the club’s final game at Chase Stadium before moving to their new home, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is now set to return to Chase Stadium, this time wearing Argentina’s colors, as the team faces Puerto Rico on October 14. The friendly will serve as preparation for upcoming international fixtures and an opportunity for Scaloni’s side to fine-tune their tactics.
“Leo’s return brings great excitement and promises a spectacular atmosphere for this new international challenge,” Argentina’s football federation said in a statement.
