Massive Sinkhole Swallows Shanghai Road Intersection

Sinkhole in middle of road in shanghai

A large sinkhole suddenly swallowed part of a major road intersection in Shanghai’s Minhang District, triggering road closures and emergency repairs.

The collapse occurred at the intersection of Qixin Road and Li’an Road on the morning of February 12. Viral videos circulating online show cracks spreading across the asphalt before the ground gives way, sending dust into the air and forcing nearby workers to run for safety. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Linked to Metro Construction

Local officials said the collapse followed a water leak reported a day earlier at a nearby construction site for the new Jiamin Metro Line. Contractors were carrying out shield tunneling work when groundwater seepage was detected.

Although emergency measures were activated and the area was sealed off, the ground reportedly collapsed overnight, forming a large chasm that swallowed sections of pavement and nearby infrastructure.

Investigation Underway

Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said the affected zone has been cordoned off and repair work is ongoing. Crews have poured concrete to stabilize the area, and nearby buildings were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

Shanghai is known to face land subsidence risks due to its soft alluvial soil, heavy construction activity, and groundwater extraction.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the collapse.
