12,000 Wi-Fi Breaches Reported in UAE Since Start of 2025

The UAE Cybersecurity Council has revealed that more than 12,000 cyber breaches have been recorded through free and open Wi-Fi networks since the beginning of 2025, warning residents and businesses of the serious dangers linked to using unsecured connections.

According to the council, these incidents account for nearly 35% of all cyber attacks targeting the UAE. Hackers and cybercriminals are using open Wi-Fi networks as traps to steal passwords, banking information, and personal data, posing a growing threat to cybersecurity in the country.

The council cautioned that free Wi-Fi networks can directly expose users to financial and personal data leaks. It stressed the importance of advanced protective measures, particularly the use of trusted VPN applications, to safeguard online activity.

Experts explained that anyone using unsecured Wi-Fi is vulnerable to multiple risks, including interception of transmitted data, stolen phone calls, redirection to fake websites, and even call hijacking. In some cases, spyware or malicious software can be secretly installed on a device without the user’s knowledge.

The Cybersecurity Council highlighted three vital steps to improve safety on public networks. First, users should always activate a trusted VPN app to encrypt their internet traffic and prevent unauthorised access. Second, they should enable “safe browsing” features in web browsers to block suspicious sites. Third, it is strongly advised to avoid logging into sensitive accounts such as online banking or personal email when connected to open Wi-Fi.

To strengthen public awareness, the council has launched a weekly campaign under its “Cyber Pulse” initiative. The second week of the campaign carries the theme “Free Wi-Fi May Expose Your Personal Data,” focusing on the dangers of free networks and offering practical tips to counter cyber threats.

The campaign is directed at both individuals and organisations, aiming to build a stronger cybersecurity culture in the UAE and enhance the nation’s resilience against digital risks.
