Abu Dhabi Police have issued a strong warning after a viral video showed e-scooter riders dangerously weaving through traffic, putting their lives and others at risk. The footage captures near-misses with cars at busy intersections, prompting authorities to remind riders to follow safety rules. Police are urging the public to report reckless behavior through their ‘#YourComment’ campaign while also running awareness programs like Darb Al Salama 2 to teach proper e-scooter use.
Strict regulations are in place to prevent accidents, including fines of up to Dh500 for riding in pedestrian zones or prohibited areas. Riders must stick to designated lanes, wear helmets, and avoid speeding—especially on sidewalks, where the limit is 20 km/h. Abu Dhabi has expanded dedicated e-scooter paths in high-traffic zones like the Corniche, but police still confiscate around 24 illegally parked or misused scooters daily.
New safety rules now require reflective gear, proper lighting for night rides, and regular maintenance checks for rental scooters. Authorities are cracking down on violations, including overcharging batteries or leaving e-scooters in direct sunlight, which can cause fires. The goal is to balance convenience with safety as e-scooters grow in popularity across the city.
