The 37-year-old actress, who now co-owns The Absorption Company, a health company, with her husband Ian Somerhalder, disclosed on The Squeeze podcast that she struggled for years with an unexplained illness. While medical professionals struggled to diagnose her condition, Reed resorted to wellness items in her quest for answers. However, she claimed that many of the treatments she was offered just did not work.
During her appearance on the most recent episode of presenter Taylor Lautner’s podcast, she spoke out what she perceives as predatory methods, stating that the industry is “capitalizing on people’s hope.” She started off by saying, “The placebo effect is real, but it doesn’t work on me,” alluding to the occurrence where a patient feels better after receiving a therapy that has no real therapeutic benefit. Furthermore, Reed clarified that despite consulting leading medical professionals and conducting extensive research during her “crazy health scare,” she was unable to find anything. As you may guess, I was visiting excellent doctors because I’m a researcher. Reed asserted, “I’m looking for the best doctors that I can and really researching for years and years.”
“I couldn’t figure this out and it was making me crazy,” she continued, “but what was making me equally as crazy was the amount of things I was being sold that weren’t working.” Her criticism of the rapidly expanding supplement and wellness business was unreserved. According to Reed, “not only do they not work, but it’s an industry that capitalizes on people’s hope because they’re hoping that it works.” “They’re taking these things, and they’re spending their hard-earned money on this massive belief that they’re going to get better from an industry that’s taking advantage of them,” she said.
