Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday stressed the need for political unity to deal with national challenges and protect Pakistan’s internal stability.
Naqvi met Bilawal at Bilawal House in Karachi, where the two leaders discussed the national political situation, law and order, and matters of mutual interest.
The interior minister informed the PPP chairman about the steps taken by the federal government to improve internal security and maintain peace.
Bilawal expressed satisfaction over the federal government’s security measures. He said current challenges can only be handled through unity and consensus. Naqvi also said all political forces must work together for Pakistan’s internal stability.
The meeting took place days after the main coalition partners — the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) — agreed to settle misunderstandings and end political differences through consultation and mutual respect.
Sources told Geo News that both leaders also discussed the recent war of words between the Sindh and Punjab governments led by the PPP and PML-N, as well as the tensions between the two parties in Punjab.
Sources said Naqvi briefed Bilawal on current PPP-PML-N relations during the meeting, which was held in what they described as a cordial atmosphere.
Earlier this month, senior leaders of the PPP and PML-N exchanged harsh statements, blaming each other for failures at the provincial and federal levels.
The political clash escalated after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz accused rival parties of using flood destruction for political gain and rejected the PPP’s demand to channel relief through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
PPP lawmakers later staged walkouts from both houses of parliament, threatened to review their coalition role, and demanded a public apology from Maryam.
Coalition leaders then stepped in to defuse tensions. Both parties agreed to stop public criticism after a PML-N delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar met President Asif Ali Zardari with Naqvi’s mediation.
Tensions further eased when a PPP team led by Bilawal met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last week. They agreed to resolve worries through dialogue and cooperation.
The prime minister also assured the PPP that its concerns would be addressed, stressing the need to protect coalition harmony and avoid needless friction.
