Thailand has lodged a formal diplomatic protest with Cambodia after a Cambodian senator’s open letter was published online, in what Thai officials say was a breach of diplomatic norms. The letter, shared by The Phnom Penh Post, criticised Thailand’s recent military actions and urged the international community to take notice of alleged Thai aggression along the border.
Thai diplomats, including the country’s ambassador to France, argued that the letter crossed diplomatic boundaries by referencing sensitive political and sovereignty issues. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry called the publication inappropriate and not in line with established diplomatic conduct between nations.
In response, Thailand has formally requested Cambodia to exercise restraint and avoid public statements that could escalate tensions. Thai officials have also emphasised the importance of respecting ASEAN diplomatic etiquette and previous ceasefire agreements intended to reduce border tensions.
The border dispute between the two countries has been ongoing, with both sides previously exchanging formal protests and public letters over military incursions and sovereignty claims.
