An investigation into potential maltreatment has been initiated after hospital staff raised an alarm. A one-year-old boy in northern China’s Shanxi province was hospitalized with over 600 needle wounds on his body, prompting a police inquiry into possible abuse. The boy, known by local media as Wang Wang, was brought to a hospital in Hunyuan County earlier this month after his parents reported that he had a fever. According to a statement released by the Hunyuan County Public Security Bureau, medical personnel were shocked to see hundreds of puncture marks covering the infant’s limbs, body, and head.

According to a South China Morning Post report, forensic examinations and images of the injuries led local authorities to conclude that the marks were purposeful rather than the result of medical care. According to the agency, the matter has been classified as suspected child maltreatment or assault and is still being investigated. Hunyuan police acknowledged that they had detained the mother, surnamed Liu, for questioning, and that more interviews with medical personnel, family, and neighbours are underway. Officials indicated they will provide more information once investigations were completed. China’s Criminal Law and domestic child protection legislation establish consequences for custodial abuse and endangerment, with harsh punishments conceivable when injury to a kid is established. In later welfare hearings, police and social service organizations may also be engaged.
