China’s Renewable Energy Capacity Sees Major Rise in 2025

China has seen a sharp increase in its renewable energy power generation capacity, with a 47.7% year-on-year growth, reaching 310 million kilowatts in the first three quarters of this year, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA).

This new renewable energy capacity made up 84.4% of all newly installed power generation across the country. Within this total, the NEA reported that hydropower contributed 7.16 million kilowatts, wind power 61.09 million kilowatts, photovoltaic (solar) power 240 million kilowatts, and biomass power 1.05 million kilowatts.

The expansion in renewable energy has played a vital role in supporting China’s power supply. In the first nine months of the year, China produced 2.89 trillion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, a 15.5% surge compared to last year. This output amounts to about 40% of the country’s total power generation.

Investment levels in the energy sector remain high. In just the first eight months, investment in major energy projects hit 1.97 trillion yuan (around US$277.9 billion), which is an 18.2% increase year-on-year, as revealed by the NEA.

The remarkable boost in renewable energy capacity marks China’s ongoing commitment to expanding sustainable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels while powering the nation’s ongoing economic growth. This achievement strengthens China’s position as a global leader in renewable energy development and green technology, continuing to push for cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
