Elon Musk’s xAI Lays Off 500 Employees, Shifts Focus to Specialist AI Tutors

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has laid off around 500 employees as part of a major shake-up in its Grok chatbot development. The layoffs largely affected the data annotation team responsible for labeling and categorizing information used to train the AI system. Although workers will remain on payroll until the end of their contracts or November 30, their system access was cut immediately after the announcement.

The company said the restructuring is aimed at improving the quality and reliability of Grok by replacing generalist annotators with domain-specific experts. xAI now plans to expand its specialist AI tutor workforce by tenfold, hiring professionals with expertise in fields such as science, finance, medicine, and safety. Tests have also been conducted among remaining staff to assess skills and determine suitability for the new roles.

Industry experts note that the shift signals xAI’s focus on more advanced and precise training methods to help Grok compete with rival AI models. While the strategy could enhance accuracy and safety in complex areas, it also raises concerns about workforce stability and the challenge of quickly scaling up highly specialized teams.
