Following criticism of the Trump documentary edit, BBC CEO Davie and news chief Turness resigned

“This is entirely my decision, I remain very thankful to Chair, Board for unswerving, unanimous support,” said Davie. Amid growing criticism over alleged bias at the British broadcaster, including concerns about the editing of a speech by US President Donald Trump in a recent documentary, BBC Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness quit on Sunday. Following the disclosure of an internal study by a former standards adviser to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, which highlighted the BBC’s shortcomings in covering the Israel-Hamas conflict, transgender issues, and a speech by Trump, the organization came under increasing pressure.

The network was recently accused by the White House of being a “propaganda machine” after it was discovered that two segments of Trump’s speech were blended together in its flagship Panorama documentary show, giving the impression that Trump was encouraging the January 2021 Capitol Hill rioting. After “reflecting on the very intense personal and professional demands of managing this role over many years in these febrile times,” Davie, who has led the BBC since 2020, announced his decision to resign. Turness, the CEO of BBC News, resigned as well. Respected overseas, questioned about news judgment The BBC, which is well-respected worldwide, has recently come under fire for allegedly failing to uphold its commitment to objective reporting and for having difficulty navigating the extremely divisive political and social landscape.

The company, which receives money from a licence fee paid by every household that watches television, is also the target of harsh criticism from various national publications and social media platforms due to its funding mechanism and alleged liberal position. It was criticized for airing a punk-rap duo Bob Vylan chanting against the Israeli military at Glastonbury, and it has battled to contain problems in recent years over the immigration views of its highest-paid sports anchor, Gary Lineker, which briefly resulted in a staff walkout. Additionally, because it included the son of a deputy minister in the Hamas-run government, it removed a documentary about Gaza earlier this year.

Trump was featured in the Panorama video assuring his fans that they would “fight like hell” and that “we’re going to walk down to the Capitol”—a statement he made at another point in his address. In fact, he had said that they would “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women” after making the comment about heading to the Capitol. In an interview released on Friday, Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary, called the BBC “100% fake news.” Turness disputes accusations of bias Thanking Davie for his efforts as director general, British culture minister Lisa Nandy said he had guided the broadcaster through a time of major transformation.

The BBC board was taken aback by Davie’s choice, according to a person with knowledge of the matter, and he would remain in his position for several months until a replacement could be identified. Davie argued that the BBC should be supported rather than used as a weapon in “these increasingly polarised times” since it contributes to the development of a strong creative economy and a healthy society. However, he acknowledged that it was not flawless and that although the latest incident was not the sole cause of his resignation, it had played a role, and he had to accept full responsibility. In order to secure its future funding, the BBC must negotiate a new charter with the government in 2027. It had seemed difficult to react to the recent string of unfavorable articles.

Samir Shah, the chairman, was supposed to apologize to MPs on Monday over the controversy. Although there had been errors, Turness stated in an email to employees that “I want to be absolutely clear, recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong.”
