Global Dairy Giants Recall Infant Formula Over Contamination Fears

Several of the world’s largest dairy companies have recalled and suspended sales of certain infant formula products after concerns emerged over possible contamination, triggering regulatory action across multiple countries.

The recalls began earlier this month when Nestlé withdrew several batches of infant nutrition products in dozens of markets after detecting potential traces of cereulide, a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting. French authorities have since opened an investigation to examine whether a reported infant death may be linked to Nestlé products, with findings expected within days.

The issue widened on Wednesday as Danone and French dairy group Lactalis announced precautionary recalls. Singapore’s Food Agency ordered the recall of Danone’s Dumex Dulac 1, produced in Thailand, and Nestlé’s NAN HA1 SupremePro, made in Switzerland, after trace levels of cereulide were detected.

Lactalis said it recalled selected infant formula batches in 18 countries, citing contamination in a raw ingredient sourced from a third-party supplier. French regulators warned that multiple manufacturers may have been affected by the same supply chain issue involving arachidonic acid (ARA), an ingredient used in infant nutrition.

Market Impact

Danone shares fell more than 8%, hitting their lowest level since February 2025, as investors reacted to the recall news. Analysts noted that infant formula accounts for about 21% of Danone’s revenue, compared with roughly 5% for Nestlé.

Despite the recalls, companies stressed that consumer safety remains intact, noting that high-heat manufacturing processes eliminate bacteria and that detected toxin levels remain below legal safety limits. Analysts added that the market reaction may have been overly severe, given the precautionary nature of the recalls.

The incident highlights how a single compromised ingredient can disrupt the tightly regulated global infant nutrition industry, particularly in key markets such as China and Southeast Asia.
