In the vicinity of Ueno station, thieves used pepper spray to seize bags that contained cash. On a popular street in central Tokyo, a group of three robbers snatched suitcases containing $2.7 million in cash, according to police and media on Friday. This is an uncommon crime in the safety-conscious Japanese city. Around 9:30 p.m. (12:30 GMT) on Thursday, the burglars used pepper spray to seize luggage holding the money near Ueno station, a major tourist destination, a Tokyo Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said AFP on condition of anonymity.
Cash to trade for other currencies
She declined to provide more information on the case, but according to local media, the victims were five Chinese and Japanese nationals attempting to load up a car with luggage worth about 420 million yen ($2.7 million). Why the group was transporting the money was not immediately apparent. According to Fuji Television, the victims informed investigators that currency exchange stations were receiving the cash. In the early hours of Friday morning, three men attacked a guy carrying 190 million yen in cash in a parking garage at Tokyo’s Haneda airport with pepper spray, according to local media. Police were examining the link between the two attacks, broadcaster TBS stated.
