The UAE’s Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi has captured stunning images of the rare interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, marking a historic first for an Arab observatory. The comet, only the third known interstellar object to enter our solar system after ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019, offers scientists a unique opportunity to study material from another star system.
Discovered on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS telescope system, 3I/ATLAS is currently around 670 million kilometers from Earth. Its tail is growing as it approaches the Sun, providing spectacular views and important data for astronomers studying its composition and behavior. The comet’s movement and bright tail have generated significant excitement among both scientists and stargazing enthusiasts.
Residents of the UAE can spot the comet with the naked eye, especially shortly after sunset. For the best view, look toward the western horizon from locations with minimal light pollution, such as the Abu Dhabi desert. Using a small telescope or binoculars can enhance the experience, making this rare celestial visitor accessible to both amateur and professional observers.
