Roblox allows people to create and share their own games and experiences, similar to Minecraft, hosting diverse communities, including military roleplaying and LGBTQ solidarity groups. The prohibition coincides with Russia’s implementation of legislation that labels public LGBTQ activism as “extremist activity.” The prohibition also comes alongside broader safety and moderation problems. Reports have revealed that the portal exposed some of its underage members to child predators. Roblox has received legal probes in the U.S. from the attorneys general in Texas and Louisiana. Since then, Roblox has implemented content control features and age checks with an emphasis on children’s safety. The game business plans to mandate facial verification for access to Roblox’s chat functions starting in January.
Additionally, the well-known game firm has asked developers to mark experiences that “are primarily themed on a sensitive social, political, or religious issue” so that parents of users younger than 13 can decide whether or not to allow their kids to access that content. Advocacy groups that represent minority groups in the gaming business, such as Out Making Games, Women in Games, and BAME in Games, reacted negatively to this. In an open letter, the groups noted that Roblox viewed themes like “pay equity in sports” to be “sensitive.” “While parental controls serve an important purpose, they shouldn’t come at the expense of fundamental human dignity.
We are calling on Roblox to reexamine these restrictions and develop solutions to protect young players without legitimizing bigotry or silencing essential voices,” the letter added. App intelligence firm Appfigures claims that Roblox was installed an estimated 70 million times in Russia on mobile, with roughly 8 million downloads so far this year.
