The singer of Please, Please, Please discussed the controversy surrounding her most recent album cover art in a new cover story for Variety’s Hitmakers Issue. The record cover art – which she released in June – shows Carpenter on her hands and knees as an unseen man tugs her hair. The 26-year-old singer clarified, “It was about how people try to control women, how I felt emotionally pulled around by these relationships that I had, and how much power you’re allowing yourself to give them.” Sabrina Carpenter experienced tremendous outrage when she revealed the cover, with many feeling it was insulting to women.
Although she acknowledges that individuals might feel that way, she maintains that her goal was very personal. “I was thinking, ‘That’s valid,’ but it meant one thing to me and a hundred things to others. Mine is legitimate. “What’s for supper?” she asked. “Not to avoid the weight that it did carry for some people,” the Espresso singer continued. I noticed it and was like, ‘That is a wonderful point. It wasn’t the point I was trying to make.’”
