Samsung releases the first phone with many folds

With the release of the Galaxy Z TriFold, Samsung is attempting to strengthen its position in a market where Chinese competitors have been gaining ground. However, analysts predict that foldable smartphones will remain a niche market for the time being due to their high cost and production difficulties. The model, which costs roughly 3.59 million won ($2,440.17), is almost 25% bigger than Samsung’s most recent foldable Galaxy Z Fold 7 model and unfolds into a 253.1 millimeter (10-inch) display utilizing three panels.

Alex Lim, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics and head of the Korea Sales & Marketing Office, stated, “I think the foldable market will continue to grow, and the TriFold in particular could act as a catalyst that drives more explosive growth in key parts of the segment.” According to Lim, the new foldable gadget is not meant to be a volume driver but rather for users who really want it. The TriFold, developed in South Korea, will go on sale locally on December 12 and be rolled out in China, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates within this year. As early as the first quarter of the next year, the U.S. launch is anticipated.

The handset includes Samsung’s largest battery in its flagship models and supports super-fast charging that powers the phone to 50% in 30 minutes. According to Lim, the cost of memory chips and other components has been rapidly increasing, making pricing a “difficult decision.” Huawei and Apple’s competition Analysts said the TriFold is more likely to be a display of the new technology rather than a volume-driving flagship. “The trifold is a first-generation product, and it’s the first time a trifold design is being commercialised, so it’s hard to see Samsung pushing large volumes at this stage,” said Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities. These trainee driving instructors are using virtual reality to help manage new perils.

He highlighted that while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line has grown over seven generations with lower cost structures, “the trifold could still face issues around completeness or durability,” making it vital to observe how the market responds first. Competition in the foldable smartphone market is poised to heat up, with China’s Huawei introducing the industry’s first three-way folding phone last September and Apple AAPL.O scheduled to debut its first foldable next year. Still, economists think high pricing and constraints to mass production are likely to hold up the sector. According to Counterpoint Research, foldable phones are predicted to make up less than 2% of the smartphone market this year and less than 3% by 2027.

According to Counterpoint, Samsung’s shipment share of the foldable market increased from 9% to 64% in the third quarter, demonstrating how market share can fluctuate based on the timing of product introductions. According to the company, the market for foldable smartphones would expand by 14% this year and then by 30% annually in 2026 and 2027, as Apple is expected to join the market.
