Pyongyang claimed that Seoul had flown a drone into Kaesong, a border city. Three individuals’ homes and offices were seized by South Korean authorities on Wednesday due to their alleged involvement in sending drones into the North, according to police. Earlier this month, Pyongyang released images of what it claimed to be debris from a drone it shot down, accusing Seoul of flying a drone into the border city of Kaesong.
Although South Korea has denied that its government or military were involved in the operation, it has hinted that it might have been carried out by civilians and promised to punish those responsible if that is the case.In relation to the drone incident, the joint military-police investigation team is carrying out search and seizure orders at the homes and workplaces of three civilian suspects, according to a brief statement from the Korean National Police Agency.
Claimed responsibility
A “thorough probe while leaving open all the possibilities” was the commitment made by investigators.
One guy has taken credit for the intrusion, claiming he did so to measure radiation levels from the North’s uranium processing plant in Pyongsan. In a recent interview with broadcaster Channel A, the guy identified as Oh stated, “I flew the drone to measure radiation and heavy-metal contamination around the uranium processing plant there.”
Drone operation run by civilians
“An act of initiating the war” is how President Lee Jae Myung has described the purportedly civilian-led drone operation. He stated on Tuesday that “this is the equivalent of firing a shot into the North” and that “we must severely punish those responsible so it will not be repeated.”
Since the Korean War of 1950–1953 ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, South and North Korea are still officially at war. The drone controversy coincides with the trial of former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, who is accused of illegally directing drone operations in an attempt to elicit a reaction from Pyongyang and use it as a pretext for his brief attempt to declare martial law. Due to his attempt to impose martial law, Yoon was impeached and ousted from office in April of last year.
