People are becoming more reliant on subterranean water sources as a result of the Water and Sanitation Agency of Lahore (WASA) providing less water. Drilling a borehole, also known as boring, is required for practically every home. However, this water supply is becoming a health threat due to the water level’s continued decline. The subterranean water level was 130 feet, according to a 2018 research, and it has now fallen to 164 feet. Experts estimate that the water level is rising by 2.61 feet every year.
Lahore residents drill boreholes to obtain water, but eventually they are sealed off. As a result, they must drill again, this time more deeply and with greater financial investment. The most severe feature, though, is that the people’ subsurface water is now poisonous. According to the experts, the amount of toxic compounds in the water will rise as the depth increases. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended level for protected subterranean water has been drastically lowered in Sindh and Punjab. According to medical professionals, this water is so harmful to human health that using it in food and beverages can result in diabetes, skin conditions, and several kinds of cancer.
According to the Lahorites, the water from the borehole is unfit for drinking or food other than bathing and washing clothes. However, they purchase drinking water from filtration plants and then utilize it. However, borehole water is also used by water filtration companies to filter water that is then sold to the public. Where will the filtration plants receive water if the subterranean supply runs out? The management claims that the main reasons of the issue are Lahore’s strong architecture, which prevents water from draining underground, and the city’s steadily growing population. This is the cause of the increasing thirst in the metropolis surrounding the River Ravi.
