Millions of people are without power after Russian military attack energy infrastructure. Days after negotiators from both sides held direct negotiations aimed at resolving nearly four years of war, authorities said that Russian soldiers in Ukraine killed 12 people and attacked energy infrastructure and a passenger train overnight on Tuesday. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko tweeted on X that a drone struck a carriage of a train carrying about 200 passengers in the northeastern Kharkiv region, killing at least five persons.

On Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared, “There is not and cannot be any military justification for killing civilians in a train carriage.” On social media, prosecutors shared pictures of the smoldering carriage, which local emergency services subsequently declared had been put out. In the southern city of Odesa, a barrage of over fifty Russian drones killed three people and injured over thirty others, according to regional officials. Russian military have regularly bombarded the Black Sea city that is crucial to Ukrainian exports.

Two girls and a lady who was 39 weeks pregnant were among the injured, according to regional governor Oleg Kiper. An AFP reporter on the site witnessed a residential building’s facade collapse and rescue personnel looking among the debris for victims. Zelensky urged allies to increase pressure on Moscow to terminate the conflict, claiming that the shelling harmed peace efforts. He posted on social media that “every such Russian strike undermines the efforts of partners who are helping to end this war and erodes the diplomacy that is still ongoing.”

Freezing temperatures

Since Russian and Ukrainian negotiators convened in the United Arab Emirates last week for US-brokered negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, deadly strikes on energy infrastructure have persisted, leaving many Ukrainians without electricity in frigid weather. According to Zelensky, the next round is scheduled for February 1.

Russian soldiers caused “enormous” damage to one of DTEK’s facilities in the Odesa region overnight, according to the Ukrainian private energy company. According to Kiper, the attacks had caused damage to numerous residential buildings, a church, a kindergarten, and schools.

In Sloviansk, in the eastern Donetsk region that the Kremlin says it has occupied, a married couple, ages 45 and 48, were murdered. According to local prosecutors, their 20-year-old son survived the assault. A drone assault killed a 58-year-old man in Zaporizhzhia’s southern region. In the southern Kherson region, Russian shelling murdered a 72-year-old woman in her home. Millions of Ukrainians have lost heat, light, and power due to Russian drone and missile attacks. Russia launched 165 attack drones overnight, according to the Ukrainian air force, and officials said that an infrastructure complex in the western Lviv region was struck.

The fifth attack of its kind this month, according to state gas provider Naftogaz, left one of its facilities in western Ukraine on fire. Slowly, Russian forces are moving over the front. On Tuesday, the Russian defense ministry declared that it had taken control of two additional settlements in the districts of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.
