A court in Abu Dhabi makes guardians accountable for the behavior of their children. Abu Dhabi: Three parents were forced to pay Dh15,000 in compensation by the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court after their young sons physically and psychologically abused a friend. According to the verdict, parents are both accountable for their children’s behavior. The case started when a woman sued her neighbors, saying that their sons had attacked her minor son and injured him. She sought Dh60,000 in damages and 12 percent yearly interest. She also asked the defendants to pay the attorneys’ expenses. In a criminal court, the youngsters had already been found guilty. The attorneys for the defendants responded by arguing that the civil suit ought to be rejected.
The criminal decision had proven the minors’ guilt, the civil court observed. A third youngster was fined Dh2,000 and required to pay court fees, while two of the boys were placed under judicial supervision with periodic reporting obligations and a one-year deferred verdict. The court found that in addition to physical harm, the assault caused the victim mental distress, including pain and psychological suffering. Consequently, the plaintiff was ordered to receive Dh15,000 in damages from the parents, together with court costs and fees.
