UAE Expands Genetic Testing Programmes for Newborns, Adults, and Couples

The UAE is expanding its genetic testing programmes to improve public health and prevent hereditary diseases. The new initiatives cover newborns, adults, and couples, offering early detection and intervention for a wide range of genetic conditions. The programs aim to support healthier future generations through advanced genomic screening.

Abu Dhabi has launched a comprehensive Newborn Genetic Screening Programme, initially at Kanad Hospital and Danat Al Emarat Hospital. Using whole genome sequencing, the programme screens newborns for over 815 treatable genetic conditions. Meanwhile, starting January 2025, all Emirati couples planning to marry will undergo mandatory genetic testing to identify potential inherited conditions, covering 570 genes linked to more than 840 medical disorders.

The UAE’s broader Emirati Genome Programme has collected over 700,000 genetic samples, aiming for one million. This effort supports precision medicine and the development of targeted therapies for various genetic conditions. Together, these programmes help individuals make informed health decisions and strengthen public health, reflecting the country’s commitment to preventive and personalized healthcare.
